Taking Care of Yourself When Your World is in Chaos

Oftentimes, in one way or another, we are put under immense pressure. Whether it be work, school, or outside responsibilities the weight of our duties and tasks can become too much.  We forget to actually live or what life was like before. Though the responsibilities can be overwhelming and take up the majority of our current life it's still important (even more so) to check in and take care of yourself. Whether it's a daily affirmation in the morning or spending a whole day to relax, checking in on yourself and needs is a must. When you don t feel taken care of you become more stressed, anxious, prone to panic attacks, and much much more. Taking even a little bit of time is mandatory to keep yourself happy and be more productive overall.

"Beauty Shower"

A Beauty shower is when you do everything while you're taking a shower. It's a hair wash, hair mask, face exfoliation, body exfoliation, shave, in shower body butter, plus lotion, body spray, and a face mask when you get out, kind of shower. It can take anywhere between half an hour to fifty minutes and you will end up feeling and smelling amazing plus a steam filled bathroom. This will help you relax, unwind and set the precedent for the rest of your night.

Exercise

If you have an everyday activity where you move your body and get your heartbeat up a little bit it  makes you feel better. Exercising has a very bad stigma that to do it right takes being at the gym for hours a day, sweating buckets, or/and having your body feel on fire. That is absolutely untrue. Exercise is a great way of expelling energy and help your body feel good, without all the gym hours and pain. Some great ways to exercise is going for  a walk, a jog, do pilates, or do yoga. These exercises don't require a lot of strength or ability nor any previous experience. They will get you and your body feeling good and help your mental health.

Walking

Walking is a great form of cardio. You get your steps in, (if done outside) get to see your surrounding area and can really take some time to reflect. Whether you do this for an hour or only fifteen minutes it wont hurt. A great person to watch to do this and have fun while doing this on growwithjo on YouTube. She has videos ranging from ten minutes to an hour and a half.

Running

Running is another great way to benefit your body. If you don't have a lot of experienced in it then start slow and work your way up but regardless of your speed its a great way to get your body moving. Any pent up energy, anxieties, or bad feelings you may have can be released while running.

Pilates

Pilates is like yoga but with more heat. With Pilates you point and sculpt. You can also meditate with this one while still feeling a slight burn in your abs or glutes. Doing pilates can be fun because the movements are very controlled and powerful making any pent up energy or anxiety you have easily expelled. Its also fun because on YouTube there are pilate ballet classes where you do ballet warm up moves that work your body but are so much fun. A YouTuber that has good quick pilates videos is Move With Nicole . Her most popular practices are the twenty minute ones. Perfect for someone who doesn't have a lot of time.

Yoga

Yoga is especially great because it includes a lot of meditation.  You can use that time to have a quiet mind, affirmations, pray, or whatever you want that time to be. With the power of the internet you can do all of them (yes including the walking and running) without needing to leave your house. Two YouTubers that post very good practices are Yoga With Adrine and Jessica Richburg. They both have practices ranging from very quick little five minute ones to hour long sessions.

Relaxing Mobile Games

Phones can cause anxiety and stress but they can help your mental health too. Both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store have so many mindless relaxing games that you can play to wind down. Some games include Homescapes, Gardenscapes, Color By Number, puzzle games, and color games. Any games where you just solve little puzzles to complete levels help so much in relaxing you. Just put on a movie or YouTube on a different device and play your game. After twenty minutes it'll feel like you fell asleep.

Always Have Something to Look Forward To

This isn't something you can do on the day to day, however it will help your motivation and mental health a lot. If you always have something exciting to look forward to after every busy and tough week it will make you feel so much better. This can be an actual object or a fun little getaway. Imagine you're doing your overwhelming tasks but have a fun day trip planned for Saturday or are going shopping for a new outfit after you're done. How uplifting and exciting is that?

Find a TV Show

Television shows are very loved for a reason. If you have a stressful day and come home you can sit down in front of the TV relax and watch your favorite show. Shows are a nice way to disconnect form your own reality. take a step back from your life and watch six friends pave their way in New York, or watch a guy try to transform his dead brother's old restaurant. Whatever the show may be it's nice to step back and have something else to think about and completely forget about your worries for a while.

Journal/ Talk to Someone

When caught up in a lot of tasks we easily experience negative emotions. however those feelings often aren't taken care of. They get created and sit until they have no choice but to come out over a minor inconvenience. Make sure to journal or talk to someone about how you feel and what you are going through. It's a healthy way of releasing any negative emotions/ energy you may have, but also a healthy way to untangle your thoughts and feelings.

Over the summer of 2023 I had to complete more hours than full time during my internship and was full time at school. Needless to say it was extremely hard. All the lessons and tips above were what helped me get through that chaotic time where the only free time I had was when I slept. I followed and did most of the tricks above and it helped me stupendously. If a busy week or few months come up, take this into consideration, it might really help!
